The mountains surrounding Aspen offer countless backcountry ski mountaineering options
Our AMGA trained/certified guides will not only take you into the backcountry to climb and ski/ride some of the amazing peaks of the Elk Range, but will teach you modern ski mountaineering and snow climbing skills, too. Some of our favorite areas offer untracked ski ascents/descents of as much as 4,000 vertical feet, and are truly unforgettable experiences. Aspen has a long heritage of ski mountaineering that dates back to the early 1900’s. This is in part due to our relatively easy access to a large number of high quality peaks to ski. Discover local classics such as Mt. Hayden, Mace Peak, Taylor Peak, Star Peak or Mt. Sopris. We have introductory ski mountaineering options with lower angle peaks that can be skinned with skis and ski crampons to the summit as well as a lifetime of steep lines that require crampons, axes and ropes to access safely.
