Women’s Intro to Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding

  • Duration 8 Hours
  • Backcountry Skiing

Join us for our women’s introductory backcountry skiing and splitboarding course!

Leave the boys behind for an introductory day of backcountry skiing or splitboarding with veteran Aspen Expeditions guide Kelli Rohrig and a crew of our female apprentice guides. This will be a full day touring in the backcountry. We will have a team zoom meeting the night before to discuss the avalanche hazard for the day and then choose the appropriate tour plan and objectives for the coming day. On our tour, we will spend time modeling quick on the move snow assessment techniques and showcase a full snowpit stability analysis.

Subjects covered include:

  • How avalanches form and release
  • Assessing avalanche terrain
  • Trip planning and preparation
  • Route Finding Decision making
  • Avalanche gear review (beacons, probes, airbags, etc.)
  • Rescue protocols and procedures

Students that are a great fit for this backcountry tour – Any current or future backcountry skier / rider that knows how to skin uphill and is familiar with their backcountry uphill equipment and how to use it. This person has ideally skied off-piste in untracked snow before and can safely ski single black diamond terrain inbounds.

Students that may not be a great fit for this backcountry tour – Beginner skiers and riders and anyone that has not used uphill skinning equipment before this day. We want to focus on backcountry education in our high-quality courses and NOT how to use our backcountry ski and snowboarding equipment. We do offer private days and avalanche education courses on request for those that may need extra instruction and for non-skiers / riders that may prefer to snowshoe or cross-country ski.
