How does staying in a remote backcountry cabin and skinning right out your front door to access untracked powder sound? Pretty darn good to me!
This will be a two-night, three-day hut trip to the Lindley Hut. The Lindley Hut is located at the foot of Star Peak at 10,480’, near the head of the Castle Creek Valley in Aspen, Colorado.
We will hike and ski all day, and retreat back to our hut just in time for some apres by the fire. This will be a fun, educational three days, in which topics like avalanche awareness, route-finding, efficient transitions, skinning technique (i.e. kick turns), and backcountry travel in big terrain will be addressed. Be prepared for good food and good friends.
The Lindley Hut has propane burners for cooking, photovoltaic lighting, mattresses and pillows, eating and cooking plate-wear/utensils, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies. Hut users melt snow for water. It is one of the more spacious huts in this zone, perfect for groups like ours.
The approach to the hut follows the old Cooper Creek Road, making for a gradual, low-key 4-mile trip in to the hut. (Starting elevation: 9,498’, Ending elevation: 10,480’).
Activity Level: Physically fit; moderate-advanced terrain [Participant should be able to ski tour for up to 4 hours per day with a pack on at altitudes ranging from 8,000’-12,000’, as well as be a competent skier on their set-ups.]
Time/Place: We will meet at 9 am on day 1 - March 23rd - to go over gear and packing. We will leave for the trailhead at 10 am. We will return to the trailhead on March 25th by midmorning.
Other Details: All meals including breakfast, dinner & apres will be provided. Please bring with you any day-time hiking snacks you like to eat along the way, (i.e. granola bars, energy chews, beef jerky, etc).
