How does staying in a remote backcountry cabin and skinning right out your front door to access untracked powder sound? Pretty darn good to me!
Join us March 31 - April 2 for a two-night, three-day hut trip up to the famed Green Wilson Hut. The Green Wilson Hut is located just below timberline in the vast Pearl Basin area, at the foot of such grand peaks as 14,265-foot Castle and 13,521-foot Star Peak. The vistas from this location are some of the best in the Elk Mountains.
We will hike and ski all day, and retreat back to our hut just in time for some apres by the fire. This will be a fun, educational three days, in which topics like avalanche awareness, route-finding, efficient transitions, skinning technique (i.e. kick turns), and backcountry travel in big terrain will be addressed. Be prepared for good food and good friends.
The Green Wilson hut has propane burners for cooking, photovoltaic lighting, mattresses and pillows, eating and cooking plate-wear/utensils, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies. Hut users melt snow for water.
The approach to the hut is a gradual climb of 1,782' spread out over 5 miles. (Starting elevation: 9,498'; Ending elevation: 11,280').
