Journey to Capitol Peak
Summit Seven

Overview

Whether Capitol Peak (14,130 ft.) is on your Seven Summits tick list or looms large as a solitary mountaineering goal, this 'Grand Teton' of Colorado awaits your arrival! This overnight mountaineering experience takes you into the heart of central Colorado's Elk Range.

You'll camp at Capitol Lake and enjoy first class mountain scenery underneath Capitol's northwest face, saddling up early for your summit day the next morning.

Capitol Peak is the granddaddy of the Aspen Seven Summits. For years, this world-class climb has earned the reputation as perhaps one of the most difficult fourteen thousand peaks in Colorado, largely due to its' exposed 'knife-edge' ridge. With an AMGA trained or certified guides from Aspen Expeditions, you'll be able to enjoy this exciting part of the climb with confidence and safety.

An ascent of Capitol Peak is the pinnacle of Colorado's fourteener climbing. Let Aspen Expeditions take you on an adventure that you'll never forget!

"As a recreational climber trying to finish the 14'ers, I was so lucky to find Aspen Expeditions and my guide, Heidi Kloos to get me up Capitol, the peak that scared me the most. Heidi hooked me up to ropes, coached me across the knife edge, showed me how to use hand and footholds across the cliffs - making it possible for me to summit Capitol. What a wonderful experience to climb with someone who really knew what she was doing and who understood how to get me to the top of Colorado's most difficult mountain. Now, I know I can do anything!."

-Gail Schoettler, Former Ambassador & Colorado Lt. Governor (August, 2006)

Itinerary

Day 1 - Acclimatization Day: On your first day in Aspen, you'll have the opportunity to go paragliding or fly-fishing, using one of these chosen activities as a means to acclimatize to the Aspen area (elevation 7,980 feet). Your acclimatization day also includes one high mountain gondola ride up Aspen Mountain and lunch at the Sundeck Restaurant (elevation 11,200 feet) where you'll enjoy amazing views of the valley's highest peaks, including the Maroon Bells.

Day 2 - Capitol Lake: The six and a half mile trek into Capitol Lake is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Aspen area. On this approach, we'll walk through alpine fields and cross over small mountain streams, finally reaching an alpine campsite at nearly 12,000 feet. Here we'll se set up base camp and prepare for our summit day in the morning.

Day 3 - Capitol Peak: With an alpine start we'll climb Capitol Peak via the Northeast or classic Knife Edge ridge. This spectacular peak is the most technical & difficult of the Aspen Seven Summits and a world-class test piece for aspiring high altitude climbers. At the end of this spectacular and long day, the team will celebrate with a farewell dinner at one of Aspen's finer restaurants.
